Carvedilol is used in the treatment of hypertension, heart failure and angina.

How it Works

Carvedilol is known as a beta-blocker. Carvedilol works on the heart and blood vessels. Carvedilol does this by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors where messages sent by some nerves are received by the heart and blood vessels. As a result,the heart beats more slowly and with less force. The pressure of blood within blood vessels is reduced and it is easier for the heart to pump blood around the body.

Introduction

Carvedilol tablet is effectively used for treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure as well as for dysfunction on left ventricular.

Composition

Carvedilol is known as an active ingredient which appears in crystalline white powder and found in 3.125 mg or 6.25 mg , 12.5 mg and 25 mg found in carvedilol tablets. This active ingredient has a C24H26N2O4 molecular formula with 406.5 molecular weight. Freely, it is dissolvable in dimethylsulfoxide, dissolvable in methanol and methylene chloride and thinly dissolvable in isopropanol and ethanol at 95%. This is not soluble in H2O or water, intestinal fluid and gastric fluid yet slightly dissolvable in ethyl ether. Each tablet has inactive ingredients such as titanium dioxide, colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, povidone, crospovidone, polyethylene glycol, magnesium stearate and talc.

Use

Carvedilol tablet is an alpha or beta-adrenergic acting as a blocker agent which has indications for treatment of high blood pressure or hypertension and left ventricular dysfunction which follows the myocardial infarction for stable patients.

Dosage and administration

This drug medicine has individual dosage which a doctor's monitoring is highly recommended. A patient must take this medicine with food. Oral administration of patient with left ventricular dysfunction must begin at 6.25 mg twice a day, then increase to 12.5 and after the 3 to 10 days interval, increase it to 25 mg. slower titration is also applicable for a lower dose starter. Those patients with hypertension start at 6.25 mg two times daily and if it must, it may increase to 12.5 for managing the blood pressure. Then, after intervals of one week to two weeks, patients must take 25 mg.

Contraindication

Important contraindications of this drug tablet that warn patients not to use it are: Stevens-Johnson syndrome which is an example of condition on patient's hypersensitivity to carvedilol, related bronchial problems like brochial asthma, severe bradycardia, second or third degree AV block, severe hepatic impairment, sick sinus syndrome, and patients in uncompensated heart ailments which needs IV inotropic treatment or have cardiogenic shock.

Important Precautions

Patient who has a coronary artery disease like acute exacerbation must not abruptly stop medication upon starting to take it. Dosage for patients with hypotension, bradycardia, or worsening heart ailment must take some reduction according to the doctor's prescription. Proper caution and lowest yet effective dose is good for patients with no allergies on bronchospasm like emphysema and acute brochitis. Patients with diabetes needs monitoring on their glucose because β-blockers is capable of mask symptoms like that of hyperglycemia or worsen hypoglycemia.

Side effects

Among the side effects of this drug tablet are diarrhea, weight gain, low blood pressure, dizziness, which are very common and easy to manage with the patient's health care provider yet other side effects like chest pain, inability to swallow, swelling of body parts especially on face, lips and mouth requires an urgent medical attention.
