Uses

Paracetamol is used in the treatment of reducing fever, and relieving pain such as headache, pain during menstruation, arthralgia, myalgia, dental pain and post operative pain.

How it Works

Paracetamol inhibits and blocks the production of pain and inflammation-causing chemicals called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are found throughout the body, but paracetamol mainly works on those in the brain that are responsible for pain and fever.

Introduction

Acetaminophen is popularly known as Paracetamol and it is used to relief pain and reduce fever. This drug is also helpful for headaches, cold, toothaches, backache, and muscle aches. It can help reduce pain in mild arthritis but it does not cure swelling and inflammation related issues. The drug is also known as Calpol and is widely manufactured by MACLODS PHARMA and GSK.

Use

As mentioned, Paracetamol is a preferred drug for reducing fever and relieving pain. It is also used in osteoarthritis to relieve pain although it has little or no effect on the swelling and inflammation caused due to the condition. It is also the first line treatment for backaches, mainly for the lower back. It is also used to treat headaches and acute migraine pain. For minor postoperative pain, this medicine is quite effective as well. For common pains related to dental, postpartum, and headaches, it acts best when used in combination with caffeine.

Dosage and administration

For a proper dosage, it is always recommended to consult your physician. It comes in the form of 10-15 tablets per strip. For an adult, it is fine to give 325 to 650 mg of this drug every 4 to 6 hours or 1000 mg every 6 to 8 hours. For people weighing 50 kg or more, it is safe to give 1000 mg every 6 hours or 650 mg every 4 hours. For those under 50 kg, it would be better to take 15 mg/kg every 6 hours or 12.5 mg/kg every 4 hours. For kids less than 2 years old, the dose would be between 7.5 to 15 mg/kg every 6 hours. The maximum should be 60 mg/kg in a day. For children between 2 to 12 years old, the dosage should be 15 mg/kg every 6 hours and 12.5 mg/kg every 4 hours with 15 mg/kg being the maximum single dose and 75 mg/kg the maximum daily dose.

Side effects

Generally, it does not have any side effects but in certain cases, consumption may show some adverse reactions. Acute overdose of this drug can cause liver failure. Although rare, it can sometimes also cause reactions to the skin, like redness and patchiness.

Storage

Acetaminophen should be stored at room temperature away from children and pets. It should be kept away from extreme heat, sunlight , cold or moisture as well.
