Sulfasalazine is used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis and crohn’s disease.

Sulfasalazine is known as an aminosalicylate, and is exhibits anti-inflammatory effects. Sulfasalazine enters the colon where it is split into separate substances, mesalazine and sulfapyridine. Sulfasalazine's antibacterial and immunimodulatory properties are due to it changing the action of enzymes within the body.
