Introduction
Acyclovir belongs to a class of antiviral drugs called synthetic nucleoside analogues. It is used to help prevent cold sores and fever blisters which occur due to the herpes simplex virus.
Use
The cream is used to treat blisters or cold sores on the face or lips that are caused by the herpes virus or chickenpox. It can also be used to treat the sores of genital herpes around the genitals and rectum. It is, however, not a cure of the herpes infection and does not prevent its spread from one person to another. Also, it cannot prevent the future outbreaks of the disease. The virus continues to live inside the body, however, the medicine decreases the severity of the symptoms associated with each outbreak as well as the length of each outbreak.
Dosage and administration
Always read the prescription leaflet available with the cream before using it. Also, ask your doctor about the proper method of application. Strictly follow the doctorβs instructions and do not use it more or less than the dose prescribed by the doctor. Usually, it is advised to apply the Acyclovir cream to the sores, five to six times a day for 4 to 6 days. It should be applied at the first sign of an outbreak of disease, when there are symptoms of itching and redness. The cream should be applied at equally spaced intervals. Also, simply apply and leave the cream as it is on the skin. Do not rub it as it may spread to the skin around the area of application or elsewhere. Wash your hands well after the application of the cream.
Warning
Always consult with a doctor in case of any drug allergies or allergies to any substances. Also, inform the doctor about your complete medical history and the complete list of prescribed and non-prescribed drugs which you have taken till now.
Also, inform the doctor in case of any previous history of immune deficiency disorders like AIDS, etc.
Also, avoid coming in direct contact with others so as to prevent the risk of the spread of this disease to them. Try to avoid making sexual contact with your partner during the outbreak of disease as well.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.
In case of any serious side effects such as anaphylactic reactions like hives, rashes, or feeling short of breath or pain and discomfort in the chest, discontinue the use of the medicine and seek medical care immediately.
Side effects
Irritation (burning and itching sensation) on the part of the skin where the cream is applied
