I. Introduction

Brief Overview of Carprofen

Carprofen is a type of medication known as a steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It falls under the propionic acid class. It has gained significant recognition for its effectiveness in relieving inflammation, pain, and fever.

Importance in Medical Treatments

This medicine is particularly important in the field commonly used to relieve pain after surgery in animals. Additionally, its importance is highlighted by how it helps manage osteoarthritis in dogs.

Scope of the Article

In the sections, we will explore the chemical characteristics, applications, recommended doses, and safety precautions related to Carprofen.

II. Composition of Carprofen

Chemical Structure

Carprofen is a molecule with a shape represented by the chemical formula C15H12ClNO2. It consists of a part called acid and another part called phenyl ring, which allows it to reduce inflammation in the body.

Active and Inactive Ingredients

The main component of this medication is Carprofen. It also contains additional ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Available Forms (Tablets, Capsules, and Injections)

There are ways to access carprofen, such as through oral tablets, capsules, or injectable solutions. This flexibility allows for its use in a range of medical situations.

III. How Carprofen Works

Mechanism of Action

Carprofen acts as an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, which hinders the production of prostaglandins. These prostaglandins are regulators in the process of inflammation.

Pharmacodynamics

Its strong preference for targeting COX 2 over COX 1 leads to effectively reducing inflammation while minimizing the usual stomach-related issues associated with NSAIDs.

Pharmacokinetics

Typically, the medication has a duration of around 8 hours in dogs. It goes through liver processing. It is mainly eliminated through the kidneys.

IV. Approved Uses of Carprofen

Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat pain and inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called COX2, which is responsible for producing inflammatory substances in the body. Carprofen can improve the quality of life of dogs with osteoarthritis by reducing their discomfort and enhancing their mobility12. However, carprofen is not a cure for osteoarthritis and it may have some side effects, such as liver damage, gastrointestinal ulcers, or bleeding disorders. Therefore, it is important to follow the veterinarian’s instructions and monitor the dog’s health while using carprofen3 .

Just as expected

This product is used for an elderly dog. It keeps her pain free with just one dose in the evening. I have noticed no difference in this and the product I get from her Vet. Very pleased.

My dog feels better

I have to split the pills for my sized dog.  They are chewable but not according to my 17 year old mutt.  I tuck them inside a snack he likes or pile his favorite treat on top of the medicine.  It is meant to help pain and it has.  It may not be true but my old, nearly blind dog seems to be able to see a little bit better too.  I am so glad I found these.  No RX and great product.
