Introduction
Metronidazole Topical gel is a kind of antibiotic which helps in the treatment of bacterial and protozoan infection. It belongs to the class of antibiotic known as nitroimidazoles. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and protozoa, however, this drug cannot be used in the treatment of viral infections.
Use
This medication is used to treat bacterial and protozoan infections. It is used in the treatment of vaginal bacterial infection. It is also used to treat skin, stomach, joints, and respiratory infection. This medication cannot be used to treat viral infections like cold, flu etc. This medication can be combined with anti-ulcer medication to treat different types of ulcers.
Dosage and administration
Metronidazole Topical gel should be used on the affected areas once or twice a day. Apply a thin film of this gel on the affected area. It is necessary to wash your hands before and after application. Use this medication for full course to completely clear the infection. Do not stop the medication in between if you start feeling better. In case you are using this gel only once a day then it is better to use it during bedtime. However, if you are using this gel twice a day and you miss one dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.
Warning
In case the patient has any liver ailment, low blood platelets, nerve problem etc, inform the doctor about the medical history of the patient prior to intake of the medication.
Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or a breast feeding mother, however if it is extremely necessary to take this medicine then consult a doctor immediately before taking the medication.
Do not smoke or consume alcohol along with this medication as they may lead to many side effects and may reduce effectiveness.
Do not use this medicine if you have taken disulfiram within 2 weeks.
Usually this gel is for genital organs only, hence avoid the medication to get into your eyes, nose and mouth. However, if it affects the eyes then thoroughly rinse with cold water.
