Azelastine Nasal Spray is used in the treatment and prevention of allergic disorders and the symptoms it can cause.

How it Works

Azelastine Nasal Spray is known as an antihistaminic medication. Azelastine Nasal Spray works by blocking the action of chemical messengers that are responsible for inflammation, congestion, itching, and other allergic reactions thus preventing the symptoms.

Introduction

Azelastine Hydrochloride is an antihistaminic drug that is prescribed for allergic rhinitis. It is prescribed to be used as a nasal spray and not to be taken orally.

Use

The nasal spray is indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and pediatric patients of 5 years of age or more, and for the treatment of the symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis in adults and adolescent patients of 12 years of age or more. It is used to control symptoms such as running nose, sneezing, itching, blocked nose, etc.

Dosage and administration

Read the patient information leaflet before using the spray. Also, follow the instructions of the doctor regarding its use.

Priming:

Before the first use, release about 4 sprays of the drug into the air until a fine mist appears. If the nasal spray has not been used for 3 days or more, prime with at least 2 sprays.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis:

For patients who are 12 years of age or more, the recommended daily dose is 1-2 sprays per nostril, twice daily.

For pediatric patients of age 5–11 years old, the recommended daily dose is one spray per nostril, twice daily.

Vasomotor Rhinitis:

The recommended dosage for adults and adolescent patients who are 12 years of age or more, is two sprays per nostril, twice daily. The daily dose also depends on your body weight and your response to the drug. Your doctor would advise you on the proper dosage and use of this medicine.

Warning

Before taking this medicine, inform the doctor if you are allergic to Azelastine Hydrochloride or to any other substances. Also, if you have any history of liver disease or any history of prescribed and nonprescribed drug use, the details must be informed to the doctor as well.
This drug may cause drowsiness hence you are advised not to drive or use any machinery that require mental alertness.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.
Do not take the medication more than the prescribed dose.
Avoid contact of the spray with the eyes. This drug has not proven to be effective in pediatric patients lesser than 5 years of age or in elderly patients more than 65 years of age.
Although rare, but in case of any serious side effects such as epistaxis, severe sinusitis, pharyngitis, dizziness, extreme tiredness or fatigue, tachycardia, or shortness of breath, discontinue the use of the medicine and consult your doctor immediately.
