Misoprostol is used in medical abortion, labor induction and post-delivery bleeding.

Misoprostol increases contractions of the uterus to cause abortion or to help labour induction. It can also prevent post-delivery bleeding due to poor contraction of the uterus by helping to increase the muscle contraction in the uterus to stop bleeding.

Patients who take Misoprostol may suffer from such side effects;

Constipation,
Uterine bleeding,
Infection following abortion,
Uterine cramps

Mifepristone is used in medical abortion for ending pregnancies that are still within 7 weeks or less.

Mifepristone is known as a synthetic steroid. Mifepristone blocks the effects of progesterone, which is a natural female hormone which is needed for the pregnancy to sustain and continue. Without progesterone the lining of the uterus breaks down like during a menstrual period and this causes the pregnancy to be terminated.
