Cimetidine is used in the treatment of acidity,intestinal ulcers, heartburn and stomach ulcers.

How it Works

Cimetidine is called a histamine H2-receptor antagonists.Cimetidine works by stopping the cells in the lining of the stomach from producing too much acid, and this helps to prevent ulcers from forming, or assists the healing process where damage has already occurred. Cimetidine works by decreasing the amount of acid, and this can also help to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux disease, such as acidity, heartburn, intestinal ulcers and stomach ulcers.

Introduction

Tagamet is a histamine receptor antagonist drug. Cimetidone is the generic name of Tagamet. It works by decreasing the acid produced inside the stomach. This medicine comes in tablet form. GlaxoSmithKline is the drug manufacturer of Tagamet. Other popular trade name is Apo-Cimetidine.

Composition

The main component of this medication is cimetidone. It has a molecular weight of 252.34 to 288.80. This drug taste bitter. The tablet form is usually light green in color and is oval in shape. The liquid form is light orange in color and the flavour is minty peach. The inactive ingredient for the liquid form is sodium chloride, sorbitol, propylene glycol, water, and artificial flavouring. The injection form comes in vial. No artificial preservative is added in the injection form of the drug.

Use

The Tagamet medicine is primarily use for treating gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. It is also recommended for GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disease and hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. It can also be use for esophagitis.

Dosage and administration

The recommended dosing for duodenal ulcer is 400 mg at bed time. However, for most patients a dose of 800 mg at bed time is used. When using Tagamet as maintenance therapy the suggested dosing would be 400 mg at bed time. When Tagamet is use in treating active gastric ulcer the dosing would be 800 mg at bed time, however, it can also be given at 300 mg four times a day with full stomach and at bed time. In the case of gastro esophageal reflux disease the recommended dose is 400 mg four times a day. Same dosing is use to patient with hypersecretory condition.

Contraindication

The usage of this drug is contraindicated to patient with hypersensitivity reaction to any of the composition of Tagamet.

Important Precautions

Important precautionary measures should be taken into consideration when using Tagamet for elderly patient. Be watchful also for patient under this drug therapy, who has other disease condition such as immune compromised patient, debilitated individual, patient with impaired liver and kidney function. Pregnant and lactating mother are discouraged to use this drug therapy. Be vigilant for signs and symptoms of cardiac arrhythmias. In the study done, it is found out that cimetidine can be excreted in breast milk; hence in this regard lactating mothers are discouraged to use the drug. Tagamet is not allowed to use for children below 16 years of age.

Side effects

Reported adverse effects of the medication are dizziness, sleep disturbance, diarrhea, headache, confusion, and drowsiness. Serious side effects that needs medical attention right away are allergic like reaction such as formation of rash that is very itchy, chest tightness, pounding heart beat, fainting, disorientation, alopecia or hair loss, breast engorgement, swelling or inflammation of the facial structure, myalgia or muscle pain, sexual disturbance, easy fatigability, formation of breast lumps, melena or black tarry color of the stool which suggest abdominal bleeding, coffee ground vomitus, and dyspnea or difficulty in breathing. However, these are just the commonly reported side effects. If you experience any side effects that are not mentioned here, then prompt your medical service provider right away.

Store the medical in a cool and dry place. Keep the drug away from exposure to direct rays of the sun. Ensure that the medication will not be in contact to moist surfaces. The ideal temperature for storing this drug is 15 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius. Always refer to drug literature in proper handling of the medication.
