How it Works
Flutamide is known as an antiandrogen. Flutamide works in the body to prevent the actions of androgens which are known as male hormones on the growth of prostate cells. Flutamide also works to block the undesired effects of androgens in females such as excessive hair growth and acne.

Flutamide belongs to a class of drugs called anti-androgens (anti-testosterone). It is a non-steroidal drug. It is available in the form of tablets that are to be taken orally. It is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Testosterone is a hormone predominantly found in males, which promotes the onset of prostate cancer.
It is used in the treatment of prostate cancer along with hormone therapy. Being anti-androgenic in nature, it blocks the effects of testosterone in males thereby preventing the growth and metastasis of prostate cancer.
Dosage and administration
Always read the patient instruction leaflet before you start using the drug and strictly follow doctor's orders. Usually, it is to be taken orally in the single dose of 250 mg, three times a day, at an interval of 8 hours thus making a total of 750 mg a day. It can be taken with or without food. Always take the drug with a full glass of water. Take plenty of fluids when you are on this drug regime. In case you miss a normal dose of this drug, just take the next dose at its scheduled time and do not take two doses together to make up for the missed dose. Do not stop taking this drug without consulting your doctor as this may lead to more severe symptoms.
Inform your doctor if you have allergies to this drug or to any other substances. Inform your doctor as well if you have any history of blood borne disorders, liver disease, or kidney disease.In case you are scheduled for surgery or dental treatment, tell the doctor that you are on this drug regime so all necessary precautions will be taken beforehand.Some drugs like warfarin, interact with this drug hence any medication that you are using should be disclosed beforehand. Do not use laxatives as well unless directed by the doctor.Diarrhea is a common side effect, hence plenty of fluid intake is advised so as to compensate for the water loss in the body caused by this drug. Also, since the use of this drug leads to drowsiness, it is advised that you do not drive or perform any tasks that require mental alertness.Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.In case of any serious side effects such as severe dizziness, rash, itching and swelling, feeling short of breath or discomfort in the chest, severe tiredness or a feeling of confusion, nervousness or anxiety, etc., discontinue the use of this medicine and consult your doctor immediately.
