How it Works

Calcitriol is known as a type of vitamin D. Calcitriol helps to regulate the amount of two minerals in the body called calcium and phosphate. All three of these substances are important for maintaining healthy, strong bones and teeth.Calcitriol also provides essential nutrients.

Introduction

This medication is mostly used to control parathyroid hormone and some minerals in the body. It is a form of Vitamin D which is responsible for controlling parathyroid hormone and is used in the treatment of diseases pertaining to this hormone and certain diseases related to minerals such as calcium and phosphorous.

Use

Calcitriol is used in certain conditions where the parathyroid hormone is either high or low. It is also used to treat low calcium levels for patients who undergo chronic kidney dialysis. As this medication is a form of Vitamin D, it has the property to absorb calcium and phosphate which is used to develop and maintain bones in the body therefore it prevents certain type of calcium and phosphate problems.

Dosage and administration

This medication needs to be taken orally with or without food. Usually it is taken once in a day or as directed by the physician. The normal dose recommended to patients is 0.25 mcg once a day for about 2 to 4 weeks and this may increase depending on the severity of the disease. The patient should continue the full course and should not discontinue the medicine if she or he starts feeling better. In case you miss a dose, then do not try to combine 2 doses at a time. Skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.

Warning

In case you have any existing allergies to any substance or develop allergies to any of the ingredients present in this medicine then consult a doctor immediately.
In case the patient has any liver ailments, kidney diseases, disease relating to parathyroid hormone etc., inform the doctor about the medical history and then take the medicine as directed by the physician.
Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or a breast feeding mother, however, if it is extremely necessary to take this medicine then consult a doctor immediately before taking the medication.
Do not smoke or consume alcohol along with this medication as they may lead to many side effects and may reduce effectiveness.
This medication can cause diarrhoea and vomiting, it may result in loss of water from the body leading to dehydration. Hence, it is advisable to drink plenty of fluids and lot of water to keep the body hydrated all the time and prevent dehydration.
