Raloxifene is used in the treatment of post menopausal osteoporosis.

How it Works

Raloxifene works by mimicking the natural effects of oestrogen. The female hormone oestrogen helps to protect a woman against bone loss. When the level of oestrogen falls after the menopause, a woman can rapidly lose bone mass, making her at higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Raloxifene works by gradually reversing the excessive breakdown of bone that happens at menopause and makes bones stronger.

This medication is used by women who are in the postmenopausal stage. It helps to treat and prevent bone loss, a condition known as osteoporosis. It helps in keeping the bone strong. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs).


Raloxifene is used in the treatment of osteoporosis. It slows down bone loss by making the bones strong. It prevents cracking and breaking of bones. This medication can also be used in the prevention of breast cancer after menopause. It acts like an estrogen hormone in some parts of the body like bones and in other parts it acts as an estrogen inhibitor like uterus and breast. This medication should not be used before menopause.

Dosage and administration

This medication should be taken orally once in a day with or without food as directed by a physician. It is advisable to take this medicine regularly at the same time of the day. It should be supplemented with calcium and vitamin D tablets as prescribed by the doctor. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by a doctor. In case you miss a dose do not try to combine 2 doses at a time, skip the missed dose and continue with the normal routine.


In case you are allergic to any substance or develop allergies towards any of the ingredients present in this medicine then consult a doctor immediately.
Inform the doctor about patient’s medical history such as diabetes, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, etc prior to the intake of this medicine.
Do not take this medicine during pregnancy or if you are a breast feeding mother. However if it is extremely important to have this medicine then consult a doctor prior to intake.
Do not smoke and consume alcohol while on medication.
Do not take this medicine if you have blood clots in arms, legs or any part of the body.
Do not take this medicine if your menstrual cycle has not stopped, i.e. you have not gone through menopause as it may have negative effect on the body. Inform the doctor from which day onwards you have undergone menopause before taking this medication.
