Cyclophosphamide is used in the treatment of several types of cancer such as, blood cancer, breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and ovarian cancer.

How it Works

Cyclophosphamide is known as an anti-cancer medication. Cyclophosphamide works by damaging the genetic material or the DNA of the cancer cells and stops their growth and multiplication thus stopping the spreading of the cancer cells in the body.

Common Side effects

Some of the potential side effects of Cyclophosphamide can include the symptoms below

Mucosal inflammation,
Decreased white blood cell count,
Blood in urine,
Hair loss,
Urinary tract infection,
Bone-marrow suppression

Cyclophosphamide is an antineoplastic drug that is used for the treatment of various types of cancer. It is usually used in combination with other drugs. It is also an immunosuppressive and thereby is used in nephrotic syndrome treatment in children, when other treatments have proved ineffective.

Due to its antineoplastic properties, it is used in the treatment of various types of cancer like leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkinโ€™s disease, mycosis fungoides, neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, ovarian cancer, breast cancer as well as others. Its mechanism of action is by cross-linking the two strands of DNA of the tumor cells, which are then not capable of dividing. It is also used in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome or other kidney problems in children.

Dosage and administration

For cancer: -

Intravenous: - For both children and adults, it is administered intravenously in the dose of 40-50 mg/kg body weight in divided doses over a period of 2-5 days. The subsequent maintenance dose depends on the body's response to the drug.

Oral: - The usual oral dose is 1-5 mg/kg body weight that is to be taken daily.

For nephrotic syndrome: -

The normal dose is 2-3 mg/kg body weight that is to be given daily for a period of 8-12 weeks.
