Ethinyl Estradiol

Estraderm is used for contraception, it is also used in the treatment of post menopausal osteoporosis, prostate cancer, hormone replacement therapy (hrt) and failure of ovarian development.

How it Works

Ethinyl estradiol is known as an estrogen. Estraderm is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring hormone in the body and it helps in development and maintenance of menstrual cycle. In post-menopausal women, Estraderm works by reducing the post-menopausal symptoms and risk of weakening bones and bone fracture.

Common Side effects

Patients who take Ethinyl estradiol may suffer from such side effects;

Mood changes,
Change in body weight,
Abdominal pain,
Breast enlargement,
Breast tenderness,
Sexual dysfunction

Estraderm MX is like the hormone estrogen, which can be given in patients, especially women through transdermal patch route when hormone replacement is required. This drug is given to the patients in the form of transdermal patches, to women who need estrogen replacement. These patches can be placed on different areas of the body like face, neck, and chest. It helps in relieving the symptoms of hot flushes. It can also be given under the prescription of the doctors for additional estrogen hormone requirements.

The patch containing the drug can be applied on the skin for a variety of conditions and at different places according to the comfort. The drug inside the patch can gradually come out and get absorbed into the skin, so that there is a gradual action for a long period of time. This type of administration is very much helpful for the long term without having any oral side effects. These patches can be given to patients to reduce the problems of menopause, which may include symptoms like hot flushes, warm feeling, nausea, and dizziness. In younger ladies also, the drug can be given to help replace the deficiency of the estrogen hormone in the body. Sometimes, it is given for short periods for temporary relief of dryness of vagina and vaginitis.

Dosage and administration

The transdermal patch can be applied on the skin and it is a very easy procedure. There is a layer in the under-surface of the patch, which when removed will provide an adhesive surface that can be pasted on the neck, arm, or chest. It should be firmly pressed to allow the corners of the patch to stick to the skin and the drug gradually passes. Depending on the amount of drug contained in the patch, it can be given for the specified period or as per the direction of the gynecologist or physician.

Women having cancer of breast or uterus should not be administered the patch.
If they are hypersensitive to the drug, it cannot be given.
Those suffering from clotting disorders cannot be given the drug even in the form of a transdermal patch.
Pregnant women should not be advised to take the patch.

Side effects

When the patch is applied, there may be localized allergic reactions or redness over the skin.

Due to the absorption of the drug into the blood, systemic side effects can be observed, like:

Abdominal cramping
Occasional bleeding
Breast tissue tenderness
Weight changes

Some other symptoms, which may become severe, require removal of the patch and discontinuation of the drug.
