Benzoyl Peroxide


Benzoyl Peroxide is used in the treatment of psoriasis, acne, keratoses which is also known as abnormal skin growth and dermatitis.

How it Works

Benzoyl peroxide is known as an antibacterial. Benzoyl Peroxide also has a mild drying effect, which allows excess oils and dirt to be easily washed away from the skin.

Benzoyl Peroxide Gel is used in the treatment of mild as well as moderate acne. It helps reduce the growth of bacteria that promotes acne formation on the skin and thereby controlling further development of acne. This medication can be combined with other treatments to effectively reduce acne, however, do note that during the treatment of acne, it may leave the skin completely dry and peeled.


Benzoyl Peroxide Gel is used to treat mild to moderate acne. Before using it on the affected area, it is important to conduct a small test to know whether your skin is allergic to the medicine. Apply the medicine on a small part of your skin for 2 to 3 days. If there is an allergic reaction, stop using the medicine immediately and consult your doctor for alternative treatments. It should only be used by individuals above 18 years of age.

Dosage and administration

Usually, physicians recommended to start with 1 application per day and then increasing it to 2 to 3 times per day if required, as advised by your personal physician. Wash the affected area with a cleanser or a mild medicated soap. After cleaning the affected area, wait for 30 minutes before applying the gel. Take a small quantity of the gel onto your finger or onto a cotton pad and apply it on the affected area. Initially, you may experience skin dryness and peeling therefore, limit the application to once per day and follow it up with a moisturizer to prevent dryness. After a few days, increase the application to 2 to 3 times per day if required, as advised by your physician. It is advised that you use sunscreen when going out while on this medication. In case of irritation or allergy, discontinue use of the medication and consult your physician immediately.


Inform the doctor if have any existing or past allergies to any substances as the medication may have such substances in its composition. In case you experience any allergies or discomfort while using this medication, stop using this medication and consult the doctor immediately.
Before being prescribed this medication, inform the doctor of your complete medical history, whether you suffer or have suffered from any liver ailments, kidney disease, diabetes, eczema, etc. The doctor would then determine if this medication is right for you.
This medication can make your skin sensitive to sunlight thus avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and extreme warm conditions. Apply sunscreen when you are going out and wear proper clothing to avoid extended exposure to the sun.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.
This medication is only for external use hence avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other sensitive areas.

Using this medication can cause side effects. Some of the common side effects are listed below,

Burning or stinging sensation on the skin.
Itching or peeling at the affected areas.
Redness of the skin.
Dryness of the skin.
Skin discoloration.
Severe rashes.
Swelling of the mouth, tongue, face, eyes, or lips.
Redness and watering of the eyes.
