Introduction
Buspirone HCl is one of the most effective anti-anxiety drugs found in the market but it doesn't belong to the typical anti-anxiety family of benzodiazepines or barbiturates. It is a novel drug that has proved to be effective in managing anxiety disorders and it is being regularly prescribed alone or in combination with other agents.
Use
For most medical purposes, this drug is used to help reduce moderate levels of anxiety. It is also used for the short term removal of anxiety. In some countries, this drug is combined with anti-depressants to further help in enhancing the mood of patients suffering from anxiety problems. Newer studies have also proved that the drug is helpful in helping patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This drug has also been used in managing motor tension and manifestations, autonomic hyperactivity, and apprehensive problems related with performance.
Dosage and administration
The dosage in which this drug is given to patients suffering from anxiety can be in 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg according to the requirements. Usually, mild to moderate cases respond to 5 or 10 mg tablets on a daily basis for a week or so. It is also not necessary for prolonged treatment of anxiety disorders, except when in combination therapies with anti-depressants. Taken orally, the tablets are sufficiently effective for anxiety problems in many patients.
Warning
Patients must also inform the prescribing physician if they are currently or were previously on a prescribed drug regimen.
It shouldn't be administered for antipsychotic treatments as independent drugs.
This drug may interfere with certain brain functions hence driving and similar activities must not be done.
Sometimes, drug dependency can occur for which the drug should be withdrawn or not prescribed with depression nervous system drugs.
Pregnant women shouldn't be given the drug.
