Erythromycin works by slowing down or completely stopping the reproduction of bacteria cells by inhibiting synthesis of essential proteins, which are required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Erythromycin only helps treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, whooping cough, pneumonia, ear, lungs, or urinary tract infections, thematic fever, skin infections, etc. It must be understood that this antibiotic is only to be prescribed for bacterial infections and not for viral infections such as the cold or flu. It has no effects on viral infections.
Dosage and administration
This medication is to be taken orally with a glass of water. It is often advised to take the medicine on an empty stomach, early in the morning or at least two hours before a meal. This antibiotic is available in different strengths such as 250 mg and 500 mg. In case of a serious infection, it is recommended to take the 500 mg tablets, 4 times a day at regular intervals of 6 hours for at least 7 to 21 days, or as prescribed by the doctor. This medication must be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. In case you miss a dose, do not take 2 doses at one time. Just skip the missed dose, take the next scheduled dose, and resume as usual. Your doctor would advise you on the proper use of this medicine.
Do not combine this medication with any other medicine unless the doctor has advised you otherwise.Avoid taking the medicine with fruit juice or carbohydrate drinks.Do not consume alcohol or tobacco while on this medication.Before being prescribed this medication, inform the doctor of your complete medical history, whether you suffer or have suffered from any liver ailments, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. The doctor would then determine if this medication is right for you.Inform the doctor if have any existing or past allergies to any substances as the medication may have such substances in its composition.
